Description
A large stylised brown flower wraps around the speckled cream body of this small Hamburger’s Pottery bud vase.
A small ceramic bud vase with a rounded body, short narrow neck and gently flared rim. The speckled cream glaze is decorated with a stylised brown flower and dark brown linear accents. The retained gold label reads Hamburger’s Pottery, Grahamstown. Made in South Africa. The rounded body gives the broad flower room to extend around the vase, while the short narrow neck keeps the floral panel visually dominant. Brown decoration against the pale speckled ground differs from the dark-ground floral vase in this group. The form is small enough for close comparison of glaze and motif. For comparison, the Hamburger Potteries 261 Blue Floral Jug provides a related example in the store. The Journal’s South African Pottery Makers: A Collector's Guide to Local Ceramics gives further collector context.
