Description
At 27 cm tall, these two handmade Murano-style art glass swan sculptures in rich green with warm amber accents and clear sculptural bases have the fluid, confident form that distinguishes the best Venetian-inspired glass animal work, the looped necks of each swan giving the pair a graceful dynamism that is difficult to achieve in any other medium.
Made in the 20th century in the Murano tradition, this pair of swan sculptures is an example of the decorative glass animal work for which the Venetian island of Murano has been celebrated since the Renaissance. The technique of lampworking, in which glass rods are melted and shaped over a flame, allows the glassmaker to achieve the fluid curves and fine detail of the swan form with a precision that mould-blown glass cannot match, and the combination of rich green bodies with warm amber accents gives these pieces a colour depth and warmth that is characteristic of the best Murano-style decorative glass. The clear sculptural bases, which elevate each swan and give the pair a formal presentation, complete the pieces with a refinement suited to display on a shelf, console, or in a curated art glass collection. The two pieces are well matched in form and colour. Both are in very good condition throughout.
