Description
At 21 cm tall and 14 cm wide, this mid-century Murano sommerso fish sculpture has the depth of colour and fluidity of form that place it among the most accomplished examples of Italian art glass animal sculpture, the layers of colour suspended within the clear glass body giving the piece a luminous, three-dimensional quality that changes with every shift of the light.
Attributed to Seguso Vetri d'Arte of Murano, Italy, and dating to the mid-century period, this fish sculpture is made using the sommerso technique, in which layers of coloured glass are encased within an outer layer of clear glass to create a sense of depth and translucency that no surface decoration can replicate. Seguso Vetri d'Arte, founded in 1933 on the island of Murano, was one of the most celebrated Murano glass houses of the 20th century, producing work that combined technical mastery with a refined artistic sensibility. The sommerso technique was among the firm's most distinctive contributions to the Murano glass tradition, and fish sculptures of this type, with their fluid, naturalistic forms and rich internal colour, are among the most sought-after examples of mid-century Murano glass. The piece is in very good condition throughout, with the characteristic depth and luminosity of quality sommerso work.
