Description
Warm, painterly and full of character, this H&K Tunstall jug in the Viola pattern is a particularly appealing example of the Tunstall potteries' hand-painted decorative ware — generous in scale, vivid in colour and confident in its brushwork.
H&K Tunstall was a Staffordshire pottery manufacturer based in Tunstall, one of the six towns of the Potteries district, producing a range of earthenware tableware and decorative pieces throughout the 20th century. The Viola pattern, with its expressive hand-painted floral decoration in warm ochre, pink and purple tones, is one of the more distinctive of the Tunstall ranges, distinguished by its sunny yellow interior and the deep cobalt blue handle that anchors the composition beautifully. The generous proportions and confident brushwork give the piece an immediacy that rewards close inspection, and the substantial size makes it a natural focal point in any ceramics display. This example is in very good condition, with no chips, cracks, or damage noted.
