Description

Lady head wall pockets are among the most evocative and collectible forms in mid-20th century decorative ceramics, and this ivory-glazed example attributed to Drostdy Ware is a particularly graceful and well-modelled specimen.

Modelled with a serene lady's face, flowing hair and a draped sculptural form, this wall pocket vase is finished in a soft ivory glaze that gives the piece a refined, porcelain-like quality. Attributed to Drostdy Ware of Grahamstown, one of South Africa's most historically significant ceramic manufacturers, the piece has the confident modelling and clean glaze finish characteristic of their decorative output. The open back makes it suitable for wall display with dried or artificial florals, or as a standalone sculptural piece in a cabinet or on a shelf. Lady head vases and wall pockets from South African manufacturers are increasingly sought after by specialist collectors, and Drostdy Ware examples are particularly desirable. This example is in visible condition as shown in the images.
