Description

The burgundy red glaze is the rarest of the Lucia Ware fish planter colourways, and in the style 2202 form, with its moulded fin, tail, and facial detail, the deep rich colour gives the piece a warmth and presence that the black examples, striking as they are, cannot quite match.

Made by Lucia Ware of South Africa in the 20th century and marked style 2202 to the base, this fish planter vase features a deep burgundy red glaze over a ceramic body with moulded fin, tail, and facial detail. The style 2202 is the larger of the two Lucia Ware fish planter forms, and the burgundy red colourway, less commonly encountered than the black, makes this a particularly desirable piece for collectors assembling the full Lucia Ware fish planter range. Lucia Ware fish planters in any colourway are actively collected as examples of South African mid-century ceramic design, and the burgundy red examples command a premium in the collector market.
