Description
Northwood Glass is widely regarded as having produced some of the finest carnival glass of the early 20th century, and this Fruits and Flowers bonbon dish, with its twin handles, crimped beaded rim, and rich blue-gold iridescence, is a strong example of the company's output at its most accomplished.
Made by the Northwood Glass Company of Wheeling, West Virginia, in the early 1900s, this bonbon dish features the Fruits and Flowers pattern with twin handles and a crimped beaded rim. The Fruits and Flowers pattern, with its combination of pressed fruit and floral motifs, is one of Northwood's most celebrated designs, and the blue-gold iridescence, which shifts between deep blue and warm gold depending on the angle of light, is characteristic of Northwood's finest colour work. Harry Northwood, who founded the company, was one of the most technically gifted glassmakers of his generation, and Northwood pieces in the blue iridescent colourway are among the most actively collected in the American carnival glass market.
