Description

At 26 cm across, this Royal Albert Lady Hamilton charger plate is the largest plate form in the Lady Hamilton range and the one that gives the pattern's deep burgundy border panels, gilt detailing, and delicate floral cartouches the most generous ground on which to be seen, the scale of the piece allowing the full decorative programme of the pattern to be displayed with a formal authority that the smaller plates in the grouping cannot match.

Made by Royal Albert of Stoke-on-Trent, this charger plate is part of the Lady Hamilton tableware range, one of the house's most enduring and widely collected patterns. The charger plate, a large flat plate used as a decorative underplate or display piece, is among the most sought-after forms for collectors of English bone china tableware, and in the Lady Hamilton pattern, with its rich burgundy panels, fine gilt rim, and hand-painted floral cartouches framing a central floral bouquet, it makes a particularly striking display object. The quality of the gilding and the depth of the burgundy panels on Royal Albert pieces of this period are consistently high, and this example is in very good condition throughout.
