Description
Classical ruins, figures and cattle fill the blue landscape on this small circular Spode Italian butter pat dish.
Made in England, the dish carries Spode's Italian pattern, introduced in 1816 and recognised for its pastoral scene with architectural ruins. The composition places a ruined arch beside trees and water, with distant buildings extending the view beyond the foreground figures and animals. A narrow section of ornamental decoration follows the lower edge of the scene. Unlike larger pieces with a broad patterned border, this compact dish brings the landscape close to the rim. The black printed backstamp identifies the maker and pattern, while its F date letter supports manufacture circa 1981. The 1816 date records the design's introduction rather than the age of the dish. The decoration relates to pieces in the Blues and Whites collection, including the Large Copeland Spode Italian Vegetable Serving Dish. The Journal explores the maker in Spode and Copeland: A Collector's Guide.
