Description

A classical ruined arch overlooks a pastoral landscape at the centre of this Spode Blue Italian plate, enclosed by a broad ornamental floral border.

Made in England, the plate carries the Blue Italian design introduced by Spode in 1816. Trees, distant buildings and water establish the setting, while figures and cattle occupy the foreground beside rocky ground. The surrounding border contrasts pale floral panels with darker blue grounds filled with curling foliage, small blossoms and geometric details. A narrow patterned band separates the central view from the rim decoration. The reverse bears a black printed Spode backstamp naming Blue Italian and recording English manufacture. Its W date letter supports production circa 1997, placing this example among the later editions of the established pattern rather than its original nineteenth-century wares. The decoration relates to pieces in the Blues and Whites collection, including the Large Copeland Spode Italian Vegetable Serving Dish. The Journal explores the maker in Spode and Copeland: A Collector's Guide.
