Description
A blue pastoral landscape framed by a broad floral border covers this small Spode Italian side plate.
Made in England, the plate belongs to Spode's Blue Italian range, whose design dates to 1816. Its central scene combines a ruined classical arch, distant buildings, trees and water with figures and cattle in the foreground. Around the rim, alternating floral panels, curling foliage and patterned blue grounds create a contrasting ornamental frame. The border follows the circular outline, while a narrow band separates it from the landscape. The reverse carries a black printed Spode mark naming the Italian design and identifying English manufacture. The accompanying A7 code supports production circa 2007, distinguishing this later example from earlier editions of the long-running pattern. The decoration relates to pieces in the Blues and Whites collection, including the Copeland Spode’s Italian Blue and White Tea Cup and Saucer. The Journal explores the maker in Spode and Copeland: A Collector's Guide.
