Description

This Swinnertons Olde Alton Ware small bowl is decorated in cobalt blue with an atmospheric garden scene featuring a pagoda fountain, arched bridge, boat, water, trees and flying birds. A dense floral border with stylised dragons surrounds the scene, giving the compact bowl a particularly rich blue-and-white character.

Produced in England by Swinnertons, the bowl belongs to the Olde Alton Ware range. The blue printed backstamp reads “Olde Alton Ware” and “England”, identifying the range and country of manufacture. The design is based on the pleasure gardens of the Alton Estate and is sometimes described as the Japanese Garden or Blue Pagoda pattern. The range was introduced during the 1920s, and this example is likely to date from the 1920s to 1930s, although an exact year is not confirmed. The bowl is in very good condition, with no chips, cracks or damage.
