At 26.5 cm wide, this Adams England display plate from the Birds of America series presents the Canvas Back Duck after the original drawings of John James Audubon with the kind of careful colour transfer printing and embossed white border that made the Adams Birds of America series one of the most enduring and widely collected of all English decorative plate series.
Made by William Adams and Sons of Staffordshire, England, and dating to the circa 1930 to 1962 mark period, this display plate is part of the Birds of America series, which reproduced the celebrated bird illustrations of John James Audubon (1785 to 1851) in transfer-printed form on English earthenware. Audubon's Birds of America, originally published between 1827 and 1838 as a series of hand-coloured aquatint engravings, is one of the most significant works in the history of natural history illustration, and the Adams series brought Audubon's imagery to a wider audience through the medium of decorative ceramics. The Canvas Back Duck, a North American diving duck prized by wildfowlers and naturalists alike, is rendered here with the characteristic detail of the Audubon originals, the transfer print capturing the bird's distinctive chestnut head and white body against a naturalistic background. The embossed white border frames the central image with a restrained elegance suited to wall display. The Adams mark is present to the reverse. The plate is in very good condition throughout.
