Description

At 38 cm tall and 17 cm wide, this vintage amethyst glass onion-shaped bottle with its softly ribbed body, elegant narrow neck, and matching pointed stopper has a sculptural presence that commands any shelf or display surface, the rich purple of the glass shifting from deep violet to warm amethyst as the light moves across the ribbed surface.

Made in the 20th century by an unidentified maker, this bottle belongs to the tradition of decorative coloured glass vessels in which the form itself, rather than applied decoration, is the primary source of visual interest. The onion form, with its rounded lower body tapering to a narrow neck, is one of the oldest bottle shapes in the glassmaking tradition, with roots in 17th-century European utility glass, and its revival in decorative coloured glass of the 20th century gave the form a new life as a purely ornamental object. The softly ribbed body, which catches the light along each ridge and creates a subtle play of tone across the surface of the glass, adds a textural dimension to the form that a plain-bodied bottle could not achieve. The matching pointed stopper, ground to fit the neck of the bottle, completes the piece with a precision that speaks to the quality of the original manufacture. The piece is in very good condition throughout.
