Description
Loose cobalt lines, yellow flowers and green foliage give this small maiolica cup and saucer the movement of hand-painted decoration. Scalloped edges and warm ochre details bring out the shape of each piece without requiring a rigid matching border. Together they introduce Italian colour to a collection of tea and coffee table pieces.
Photographed undersides show matching stylised cockerel emblems, the mark associated with Cantagalli of Florence. The matching marks support the maker attribution on both cup and saucer, while the painted surface connects the pair with the Florentine maiolica tradition. The existing title dates the set to circa 1920 to 1930 by comparison, not from an inscribed year; that distinction matters when presenting a vintage piece. The current listing grades it Excellent and reports no chips or cracks. As with other glazed antique and vintage ceramics, the photographs cannot reliably reveal every tiny hairline, glaze issue or past repair. Its evident features are the hand-painted flowers, flowing blue linework and matching cockerel marks. For more context on the decoration and identification, see the Journal guide to majolica ceramics.
