Description
At 19 cm tall, this vintage iridescent lime green ribbed carnival glass swung vase has the sinuous, organic silhouette that only the swung technique can produce, the softly ribbed body stretching and tapering as the glass was worked while still hot, the ruffled rim opening with a natural irregularity that gives the piece a liveliness no mould-formed vase could match, the lime green iridescent finish shifting between yellow-green and gold as the light changes.
Made in the 20th century by an unidentified maker, this swung vase is an example of the carnival glass tradition in which pressed or mould-blown glass is given an iridescent surface finish by the application of metallic oxide sprays before firing. The swung technique, in which the hot glass is stretched and elongated by swinging it on the end of the glassmaker's rod, produces the tall, tapering form with its characteristic organic irregularity, each piece emerging from the process with a slightly different silhouette that makes swung vases among the most individual of all carnival glass forms. The ribbed body, which catches the iridescent finish along each ridge and creates a subtle play of tone across the surface, adds a textural dimension to the form. The lime green colour, one of the less common carnival glass colours, gives this piece a freshness and brightness that distinguishes it from the more familiar marigold and purple examples. The piece is in very good condition throughout.
