Description
Apple-green lustre catches the raised leaves on this Maling jug, giving its botanical decoration a change of light across the curved body. A shaped pouring lip, slender handle and gilt edge complete a form made for the table but equally suited to display. The jug introduces a different colour and surface to a collection of tea and coffee table pieces.
The existing identification records a printed Maling England backstamp with the company's castle emblem on the underside. That maker mark connects the piece to Maling of Newcastle upon Tyne more securely than glaze or shape alone. The date range for this version of the mark runs broadly from the 1920s until the pottery's closure in 1963. Raised foliage and the lustrous glaze are observable decorative features rather than a named pattern unless further evidence appears. The listing grades the jug Excellent and reports no chips or cracks, but For more context on the decoration and identification, see the Journal guide to collecting vintage ceramics.
