Description
At 9 cm tall and 16 cm wide, this Olustria ceramic spill vase modelled as a hunting fox resting against a tree stump has the kind of naturalistic detail and warm pale brown glazed tones that make well-made ceramic animal figures so appealing to collectors, the moulded fur texture, fine ground and foliage detail, and the fox's alert, watchful posture combining to produce a piece with genuine character and presence.
Made by Olustria and marked 1620, this spill vase belongs to the tradition of ceramic animal figure work that has been produced in European potteries since the 18th century, when the naturalistic modelling of animals in porcelain and earthenware became one of the most popular forms of decorative ceramic production. The spill vase form, in which a hollow vessel is incorporated into a naturalistic figure group, was particularly popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries, and the combination of the hunting fox subject with the tree stump vase form is a well-established pairing in the English and Continental ceramic traditions. The pale brown glazed tones, which give the fox's coat a warm naturalism, are applied with sufficient variation to suggest the texture of the fur, and the ground and foliage detail at the base of the piece completes the naturalistic setting with care. The piece is in good condition throughout.
