At 4 cm tall and 9 cm wide, this solid brass stamp box with its hinged pierced lid, sunflower motif, and beaded base detail is a gem of a desk accessory, the quality of the casting and the crispness of the sunflower decoration giving the piece a refinement that speaks to the care with which the best Art Nouveau-influenced decorative brassware was made in the early 20th century.
Made in the 20th century by an unidentified maker, this stamp box belongs to the tradition of decorative desk accessories that flourished in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when the writing table of the well-appointed study was furnished with a range of small objects in silver, brass, and other metals, each designed to be both functional and decorative. The stamp box, intended to hold postage stamps and keep them flat and accessible, is one of the smaller and more intimate of these desk accessories, and this example, with its Art Nouveau-influenced sunflower motif on the pierced lid, brings the characteristic organic ornament of the Art Nouveau movement to a form of considerable practical utility. The hinged lid, which opens smoothly on its hinge, and the beaded base detail, which gives the piece a formal finish, complete the object with the attention to detail that distinguishes quality brassware from purely functional metalwork.
