Description
At 12.5 cm tall and 22 cm wide, this Wedgwood blue jasperware pedestal bowl with its applied white classical relief decoration and laurel-style border has the graceful proportions and formal elegance that the pedestal form brings to Wedgwood jasperware, the elevated stance of the bowl giving the classical relief decoration a prominence and visibility that a flat-based bowl could not achieve.
Made by Wedgwood of Stoke-on-Trent, this pedestal bowl is an example of the jasperware for which Wedgwood has been celebrated since Josiah Wedgwood developed the material in the 1770s. The soft blue jasperware ground, with its characteristic matte surface, provides the ideal ground for the applied white classical relief decoration, the contrast between the blue body and the white figures giving the piece the crisp, graphic quality that has made Wedgwood jasperware one of the most enduringly popular and widely collected categories of English ceramics. The pedestal form gives the piece a formal presence suited to display on a mantelpiece or in a cabinet, and the laurel-style border completes the piece with the formal elegance characteristic of the best Wedgwood jasperware production. The piece is in very good condition throughout.
