Made by Wedgwood of Stoke-on-Trent, this pedestal bowl is an example of the jasperware for which Wedgwood has been celebrated since Josiah Wedgwood developed the material in the 1770s. The soft blue jasperware ground, with its characteristic matte surface, provides the ideal ground for the applied white classical figure panels, the contrast between the blue body and the white figures giving the piece the crisp, graphic quality that has made Wedgwood jasperware one of the most enduringly popular and widely collected categories of English ceramics. The classical figure panels, which depict figures in the neo-classical tradition that Wedgwood drew on throughout the jasperware range, are rendered with the precision and delicacy that the Parian-like jasperware material allows, and the laurel-style border completes the piece with the formal elegance characteristic of the best Wedgwood jasperware production.
