Description
At 15 cm tall and 8 cm wide, this vintage white bone china pitcher with its graceful pedestal form, high curved handle, and raised floral band detail around the body has the refined, understated elegance of the best English bone china decorative wares, the embossed floral band giving the piece a textural dimension that the smooth white surface alone could not provide.
Made in the 20th century by an unidentified maker, this pitcher belongs to the tradition of white bone china decorative wares in which the quality of the material and the refinement of the form are allowed to carry the decorative weight of the piece, with embossed or relief decoration providing ornament without the addition of colour or gilding. The bone china body, with its characteristic translucency and fine white surface, gives the pitcher a lightness and luminosity that earthenware or porcelain of lesser quality cannot match, and the pedestal form, which elevates the body on a raised foot, gives the piece a formal elegance suited to display on a dressing table or in a cabinet. The high curved handle, which rises above the rim of the pitcher, and the raised floral band detail, which encircles the body with a pattern of embossed flowers, complete the piece with the attention to detail that distinguishes quality bone china production. The piece is in very good condition throughout.
