Description

Cupid as the Oracle is one of the more whimsical subjects in the Wedgwood neoclassical repertoire, and its appearance on this kidney-shaped lidded trinket dish, framed by a delicate floral garland border, gives the piece a charm that is unusual in the typically more austere black jasperware range.

Made by Wedgwood of Stoke-on-Trent, this lidded trinket dish features a softly kidney-shaped silhouette in matte black jasperware, with a raised white classical relief depicting Cupid as the Oracle to the lid, surrounded by a delicate floral garland border. The kidney shape is a less commonly encountered form in the black jasperware range, and the fitted lid with its precisely applied relief makes this a more complex piece than the standard open dish forms. The Cupid as the Oracle subject, drawn from classical mythology, was used by Wedgwood across several forms and represents one of the more distinctive motifs in the jasperware catalogue.
