Description
Gold on black is one of the most luxurious combinations in the Wedgwood jasperware range, and at this intimate scale, with a single gilt cherub to the lid, this pill box has the kind of quiet opulence that rewards close handling.
Made by Wedgwood of Stoke-on-Trent, this lidded pill box features a matte black jasperware body with a raised gilt cherub motif applied to the lid. The use of gold relief rather than the standard white marks this out as a more decorative variant within the jasperware tradition, the warmth of the gilding contrasting sharply with the deep matte black ground. Pill boxes of this type were produced by Wedgwood across the 20th century as refined gift and collector pieces, and the cherub subject, drawn from classical and Renaissance decorative traditions, gives this example a particularly elegant character.
