Description
At 7 cm tall and 16 cm wide across the saucer, this Wood and Sons Oriental Bird pattern tea cup and saucer has the quiet charm of well-made early English transferware, the blue floral transfer decoration with its subtle touches of colour giving the piece a warmth and character that purely blue and white transfer printing cannot quite achieve.
Made by Wood and Sons of Burslem, Staffordshire, in the early 20th century, this cup and saucer in the Oriental Bird pattern is an example of the decorative transferware produced by one of England's most enduring potteries for the domestic and export markets. Wood and Sons, founded in 1865, was one of the major Staffordshire transferware producers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries, and its Oriental Bird pattern, with its blue floral transfer decoration and subtle colour accents, belongs to the tradition of chinoiserie-inspired English transferware that has been produced since the 18th century. The Oriental Bird pattern, with its stylised bird and floral motifs rendered in blue transfer with touches of additional colour, gives the cup and saucer a decorative richness that distinguishes it from the more austere blue and white transferware of the same period. The piece is in good condition with minor age-appropriate wear.
