Antique British Tambourine Bird and Floral Plate 2125

A central bird and butterfly perch among abundant flowers on this scalloped English plate, its moulded rim and rich green, orange and pink colouring making it a lively example of early Victorian transferware.

The underside bears the printed pattern name British Tambourine and the pattern number 2125, which has been attributed to Mellor, Venables and Co. This attribution is based on the historical association of the pattern rather than a printed maker's name on the plate itself, so it should be regarded as a careful attribution rather than a confirmed maker's mark. If accurate, it places the plate within the circa 1834 to 1851 production period of the Burslem firm, a time when richly coloured transfer printed tableware with naturalistic bird and floral themes was in wide demand across England. The scalloped, moulded rim adds further period character to an already decorative piece.
