At 7 cm tall and 15 cm wide, this Belleek basket weave sugar basin with its pink lily decoration and soft cream lustre finish is a perfect example of what has made Belleek Ireland one of the most beloved and widely collected names in fine porcelain, the feather-light weight of the piece and the luminous quality of the cream lustre giving it a delicacy that no other European porcelain tradition quite matches.
Made at the Belleek Pottery in County Fermanagh, Northern Ireland, and marked with the 11th Mark, which dates the piece to 2001 to 2007, this sugar basin is shaped with the house's signature basket weave moulding, in which the body of the piece is formed to resemble the interlaced pattern of a woven basket, and finished with delicate pink lily floral decoration in the soft cream lustre that defines Belleek at its finest. The Belleek Pottery, founded in 1857, has been producing its distinctive basket weave wares since the 1860s, and the combination of the basket weave moulding with floral decoration in the cream lustre finish has remained one of the most enduring and sought-after of all Belleek designs. The pink lily decoration, applied with the delicacy and precision that characterise Belleek's floral work, gives this sugar basin a warmth and colour that the plain cream basket weave pieces cannot match.
