Description
Generous in scale, richly decorated and full of autumnal warmth, this H&K Tunstall cream jug in the Autumn pattern is a particularly fine example of the Tunstall potteries' hand-painted earthenware tradition — and the prominent grape motif sets it apart from the standard Autumn range pieces.
H&K Tunstall was a Staffordshire pottery manufacturer based in Tunstall, one of the six towns of the Potteries district, producing a range of earthenware tableware and decorative pieces throughout the 20th century. The Autumn pattern, with its deep cobalt blue ground warmed by ochre tones and animated by bold hand-painted fruit decoration, is one of the most recognisable and collected of the Tunstall ranges. The substantial size and shaped handle of this cream jug give it a commanding presence suited to display as much as use, and the grape motif adds a decorative richness that makes it a standout piece within the Autumn grouping. This example is in very good condition, with no chips, cracks, or damage noted.
