Description
This small Royal Crown Derby coffee saucer carries the bold cobalt, iron-red and gilt decoration of Traditional Imari 2451. Geometric panels and stylised flowers fill its compact form without turning it into a complete coffee set. Displayed alone or with a properly matched cup, it belongs among tea and coffee table pieces.
The existing identification records a red Royal Crown Derby England backstamp and painted pattern number 2451 beneath the saucer. Those markings support the maker and pattern. The position of England in the recorded mark has been associated with a broad period around 1891 to 1921; it does not supply an exact year for this example. The smaller 11.5 cm width distinguishes this coffee or demitasse saucer from the larger 1917 tea saucer listed separately. Its decorated surface, marked underside and single-piece status are all important when considering an appropriate match. The selectable variant grades it Very Good and reports no chips or cracks, but photographs cannot substitute for a hands-on inspection of its rim and foot. For more context on the decoration and identification, see the Journal guide to Imari-inspired ceramics. Compare the different decoration on the larger 1917 tea saucer in pattern 2451.
