Description
At 13.5 cm across, this round Wedgwood black jasperware ashtray is the larger and more substantial of the two grapevine ashtray forms in this collection, and the circular format gives the grape and vine border relief a continuous, uninterrupted flow that works particularly well with the motif.
Made by Wedgwood of Stoke-on-Trent, this round ashtray features a matte black jasperware ground with softly notched rests and a raised white grape and vine border running around the rim. The grape and vine motif, drawn from classical antiquity and associated with Bacchus, was a recurring element in Wedgwood's decorative vocabulary, and the circular format here allows the border to read as a complete wreath rather than a section of a larger pattern. The notched rests are neatly integrated into the border design, maintaining the decorative coherence of the piece.
