Description

Pink jasperware is among the most delicate and least commonly encountered of Wedgwood's colour range, and at this small scale, with a finely detailed chariot relief at the centre, this pin dish is a particularly refined example of the form.

Made by Wedgwood of Stoke-on-Trent, this pin dish features a soft pink jasperware ground with a crisp white neoclassical chariot relief at the centre and radiating fluted decoration around the border. The chariot subject, drawn from classical antiquity, was a recurring motif in Wedgwood's decorative vocabulary, and the precision of the applied relief work here is characteristic of Wedgwood's quality control at its most exacting. Pin dishes of this type were produced as refined gift pieces and collector's items, and the pink colourway in particular was associated with the more feminine end of the jasperware range.

The pink colourway is harder to source than blue or black jasperware. This pin dish pairs naturally with the lilac creamer (CBD-0027) for collectors focused on the rarer Wedgwood jasperware colours.
