Description

Stylised geese take flight across sweeping embossed leaves on this rounded, shouldered vase, its bold relief work and two toned cream and brown finish making it an eye catching example of 1930s Art Deco pottery.

The underside bears a printed Burleigh Ware factory mark reading Burslem England, together with the pattern or shape number 4452, confirming production by Burleigh Ware in the Staffordshire potteries. The dramatic flying bird motif and strongly moulded botanical forms are characteristic of Burleigh Ware's embossed ranges from the 1930s, when the factory paired sculptural relief decoration with contrasting textured glazes to striking effect. The rounded, shouldered profile of the vase gives the design room to develop across its surface, and the piece displays well either on its own or alongside other Art Deco ceramics.
